Girl You Crazy: Excerpts from My College Diary Part 1

Girl You Crazy: Excerpts from My College Diary Part 1 on Monogrammed Magnolias

You guys, I am literally crying from laughing so hard as I type this.

One of the perks of moving is finding crazy weird things hoarded away in random places that you’ve forgotten. One example being my journal from junior year of college. I was cleaning out my old bedroom when I found it jammed in between an old shoebox and a tote full of winter clothes.

I sat in the floor of my closet reading it for hours and it is just too funny not to share. It does depict all the craziness of my 21st year, after all. So I thought I would switch things up and share a few bits and clips from it’s pages. I don’t even think I’m fully prepared for this level of sharing. However, it’s fun to look back and see just how much has changed in four short years.

Who knows, you could learn a life lesson or two from my mistakes, find it absolutely hilarious (like I do), or you might just wish you could “unknow” some things about me.

August 2012 – Wannabe Elle Woods

“It’s so amazing to be back at school! So much has happened this week, it’s unreal! I pulled together Recruitment Week practically single handedly. Then my sorority voted me as Vice President and I was elected to student government. I also dropped that god-awful creative writing class and realized I have to take the LSAT in February. Speaking of which, I had an interview at a law firm today! Oh, and the Party for a Purpose that I helped plan for the Pink Ladies is tonight. Elle Woods, watch out!”

So sticky sweet I have a toothache just from reading that. Who writes like that in a journal? Let’s back track a bit, that year’s Recruitment Week ended up bombing thanks to a group of troublemakers. I left the sorority by the end of that semester thanks to some crazy drama. So I was a little quick to congratulate myself there. Also, one of my biggest regrets from college is not answering my advisor honestly when she asked why I dropped that creative writing class. The truth was the professor was a sexist ass. Instead I told her I just didn’t like the class. Look at what I’m doing right now…creative writing! It obviously wasn’t the class. I also never took the LSAT because after landing that job at the law firm and spending six months working with eight lawyers, I realized being a lawyer wasn’t for me.

September  2012 – The Crazy Just Keeps Coming

“Just sitting here wondering why there are so many girls on campus who have boyfriends but look like crap every second of the day?! Seriously, they’re all running shorts, cut-off shirts, and no make-up. I wear that around the dorm, maybe to the tanning salon but never ever ever would I wear them on campus 24 hours a day 7 days a week. It’s just not logical. I mean they’re not even pulling the look off. For example, there was this chick at lunch who looked like she just rolled out of bed with Bride-of-Frankenstein hair but across the table from her were two baseball boys flirting their little hearts out?! It just doesn’t make any sense!”

First of all, I swore off judging fellow females based solely on their appearance around age 23 so let me just apologize for vapid Merisa. Second, jealous much? Oh and this actually turned out to be the year I came to my senses and ditched the tanning bed completely so there’s that.

October 2012 – Forever 21

“Birthweek Recap: So aside from being introduced to the fantastic world of 21+ I’ve had an amazing birthweek! From Lawyer Boy and his precious navy suit to getting day drunk with my momma. My awesome friends with their midnight game of Battleshots and the 11th hour birthday wish I’ve realized just how much I have to be grateful for. That’s why I’ve decided to screw the New Year’s Resolution and start my year over at 21. I resolve to stop focusing on the bad in my life and realize that those issues are in the hands of a higher power. There’s no use in me wasting my energy pouting.”

Well, 21 year old me seemed to be headed in the right direction after all. As for the first part, I was fully convinced “Lawyer Boy” wore a navy suit on my birthday for me after I told another secretary navy was my favorite color on a guy. The world my never know if he did or not. I really did get day drunk with my momma. At the same local bar I used to eat Cheerios off the counter of as a baby when she was a waitress there. Also, Battleshots quickly became a campus classic.

“Am I the only one who believes Facebook messages are not a form of courtship?! Come on, guys get with the program…I do not want to start a relationship on “Hey, what’s up?” spelt out in a little instant message block (and that’s if I get the courtesy of correct grammar and punctuation) by someone who just passed me while walking back to my dorm but didn’t have the guts to say anything in person!”

I used the word “courtship” in reference to a college relationship. I obviously still had a lot to learn. Little did I know it would only get worse thanks to Tinder.

Whoa! That was a lot to handle! I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. You know, I look back on a lot of those excerpts and can’t believe I’m the same person that wrote them. I guess I’m not though. One thing is for sure, I’m proud of how far I’ve come.

Want to read more from my college diary? Goodness knows there’s plenty more to share! Let me know in the comments or Tweet Me so I know whether to continue the series or not.

Beauty Trend: Vampy Lips

Beauty Trend: Vampy Lips on Monogrammed Magnolias

Nothing says autumn beauty to me more than a dark, vampy lip. A dark lip color can be a bit intimidating at times though. That’s why I wanted to walk you through this mega trend and show off a few of my favorites. I’ve got everything from matte to glossy, practically black to shades of berry. There’s something here for everyone so if you’re looking to join in or just wanting to try something new, keep reading!

Urban Decay Vice Lipstick in Hex

I’m obsessed with all of the Urban Decay Vice Lipsticks but Hex really hits the spot when it comes to fun, Fall colors. As a Mega Matte shade Hex is not only long lasting but it’s super comfortable too. What’s not to love?

Smashbox Be Legendary Lip Lacquer in Bordeaux

Something for the glossy girls that’s just about as dark and delicious as they come. This Lip Lacquer is long wearing so it’ll take you through even the craziest of Halloween parties.

Beauty Trend: Vampy Lips on Monogrammed Magnolias

Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Damned

Back to the matte-est of mattes with this one. I’m a big Kat Von D liquid lipstick fan. In fact, they’re probably my favorite ones on the market. I was feeling adventurous when I picked up Damned

L’Oreal Color Riche Extraordinaire Lip Color in 502

I have to admit, what most attracts me to this lip color is the packaging. That’s okay though because it’s actually a really great shade! It’s glossy yet comfortable and perfectly fits into the vampy trend.

Beauty Trend: Vampy Lips on Monogrammed Magnolias

Tarte Lip Surgence Lip Tint in Moody

Consider this a lip color for all the baby vamps out there. If you’re just getting your feet wet with the trend then I suggest a little Moody to get you started. First of all, it’s incredibly easy to apply as it comes in lip crayon then it’s a great dark berry shade that flatters just about every skin tone. You can’t go wrong.

What do you think of this Fall beauty trend? Got a favorite go-to vampy lip color? Let me know in the comments below and be sure to follow me on Instagram for more beauty tips and tricks!

Halloween Group Costume Ideas + Link Up

Halloween Group Costume Ideas + Link Up on Monogrammed Magnolias

“I remember when I thought group costumes were a good idea. Too much work! And not enough friends.” – Darrell, Bob’s Burgers

Do you feel the struggle of group costumes? Well fear not because we’re sticking with the series from last Friday with a Halloween Group Costume Idea round-up! These next five group costume ideas are sure to be hits and the best part is they can be DIY’d! What could be better than that?

Stranger Things

I accomplished something off my Fall Bucket List the other day, I rewatched Stranger Things, this time with my roommates. We’re all obsessed with those adorable kids. Oh and don’t get me started on Nancy’s subtle 80s fab style. How could you not want to get the gang together, ransack a thrift store, and hot the Halloween party as the hottest crew on TV Netflix.

Troop Beverly Hills

Remember Kim Kardashian’s Troop Beverly Hills baby shower a while back? Yea, she totally stole that from me, except it was my Pinterest-fueled imaginary bachelorette party but still. Whatever, it’s cool, I’m over it. However, that’s not going to stop me from dreaming up a full blown Troop Beverly Hills fantasy #girlsquad Halloween.

Okay, okay, I might have more of a thing for the 80s than I originally thought but how perfect would the cast of Clue be for a group costume? Whether you’re a fan of the board game, the movie, or both (like me!) you can find something for everybody in this costume. Personally, I’ve always been a Miss Scarlet myself…in the ballroom, with the candlestick.

American Horror Story

I’m a huge AHS fan, just take a peek at my Twitter feed on any given Wednesday for proof. I can’t help thinking how amazing it would be to get a group together and go as the characters from any of the anthologies. While everyone would be clamoring over Tate and Moira from Murder House you could give me a leopard jacket, ripped stocking, I’ll nix the under eye concealer and you can call me Hotel’s Hypodermic Sally. Viola!

Power Rangers

Did you see that trailer? I watched it without sound the first time and it was still amazing! Of course, that’s coming from someone who had two Power Ranger birthday cakes, endless episodes on VHS, and the pink ranger Barbie so I might be a little biased. What an epic throwback though! Oh and just my two cents here but Mighty Morphin or nothin’.

Well there you have it, y’all! Fire up the group texts, find your local thrift store, and get to it! Oh, but in the meantime, don’t forget to check out the linkup below!

My Favorite Bloggers to Follow on Snapchat

My Favorite Bloggers to Follow on Snapchat on Monogrammed Magnolias

Is it just me or has everyone fled from Snapchat in favor of Instagram stories? Personally, I just don’t get it. Then again I am the girl that’s only recently gotten the hang of the whole Snapchat thing anyway. Whatever the deal is I feel like there’s less and less going on in my Recent Stories feed. However, there are some shining stars who deserve many praises and ALL the follows. All me to introduce them to you.

Helene In Between@heleneinbetween

  • Currently settling in to her new home in Heidelberg, GERMANY! — AKA getting to live out an incredible European adventure vicariously through each snap. Plus, I literally squealed with glee when Helene announced that they finally found the perfect place to live! So exciting!
  • Cute dogs frequently featured — I can’t get enough of the Sula kids, Millie & Hugo. They’re adorable.
  • Great blogging tips & BTS — Helene is known for her kickass advice but she offers a bit of an inside view of her blog, Instagram, and Blog Boss Babe network to her Snapchat followers that you can’t get anywhere else.
  • Occasional EDM dance parties — That’s just good old fashion fun, people.

The College Prepster@collegeprepster

  • So relatable! — I’ve been following Carly’s blog since I was in high school so I feel like I’ve grown up with her and getting to see the behind the blog bits of her life makes me so proud.
  • Cute relationship — this goes back to feeling like I’ve grown up with Carly, but I love seeing her and Garret’s relationship! It makes me so happy to see them happy!
  • Cute dogs frequently featured — Carly got Teddy right around the same time I got my dog, Tucker so now even our dogs are growing up together. Oh and we can’t forget (not so) little Hamilton!
  • The fashion — I live for Carly’s OOTDs, even if she’s just running into the city for a meeting or heading up the coast with Sarah Vickers and KJP. I LIVE!

The Stripe@grace.atwood

  • NYC adventures — even when she’s sick Grace still manages to take us along for the ride through some fabulous NYC events.
  • BTBS — in case you haven’t caught on, I’m a big fan of behind the blog scene snaps and Grace truly delivers in that department.
  • Relatable — Zero shade intended but when I see Grace groaning about her messy apart or grabbing a hotel room just to shoot for a campaign I feel 100% better about the awful lighting, judgey neighbors, and clutter that I have to deal with in my apartment. She understand my struggle!
  • Cute cat frequently featured — breaking from the pattern a bit here but I love seeing the fluffy little guy pop up in snaps nonetheless.

Cristina Was Here@cristina.snaps

  • Blog Friend — I’m in a few of the same blogger centric Facebook groups as Cristina so I’ve been following along with her blog for a while and following her on Snapchat just ads a whole new dimension to our blogger friendship!
  • Story Time — Cristina makes telling a story directly to the camera look so easy.
  • BTS – I love seeing bits behind the scenes of Cristina Was Here. In fact, I’m still mesmerized by her blog photo process.
  • Cute dog occassionally featured — Keeping the streak going!

Embracing Twenty Something@embracing20s

  • Branded snaps! — Kelsey’s stories are serious #GOALS! As soon as I see peachy-pink writing or background in a snap I know it’s Kelsey’s! That’s what you want your audience to do, right? The effort she goes into definitely does not go unnoticed.
  • Completely unique — This is kind of a continuation of the whole branded snapchat thing but I’m just so impressed and I don’t follow anyone that does it even close to Kelsey so that’s definitely a plus.
  • Cute little M frequently featured – Honestly, I can’t remember what role Kelsey plays in M’s life, I think she’s her nanny. It doesn’t really matter because they are freaking adorable together and I get such a kick out of it.
  • #ImWithHer — Kelsey is not afraid to go there when it comes to politics. She’s been very open about her political opinions and that’s something that keeps me coming back for more. It’s inspiring!

I love these girls and I think you will too. Go give them a follow! Oh and while you’re at it, you can follow me on Snapchat too by searching @angelmerisa23 or screenshotting the snapcode in the sidebar.

9 Must-Have Apps for Bloggers

9 Must Have Apps for Bloggers on Monogrammed Magnolias

Okay, okay…I know this isn’t the most original idea on the face of the planet but it did come to me organically. I was talking with Tara Joy from Beaus and Bows the other day and we got on the topic of apps for blogging. One thing led to another and here we are, chatting about my Must-Have Apps for Bloggers. Some of these might seem obvious but hopefully you’ll find something useful even if it’s just a tip or trick on how to use an app.

9 Must Have Apps for Bloggers on Monogrammed Magnolias

Must Have Apps for Bloggers

Bloglovin’ – Obvious? Maybe. Necessary? Absolutely. This is how I stay up to date with some of my favorite blogs from friends to big name idols, it’s all there in one place.

9 Must Have Apps for Bloggers on Monogrammed Magnolias

ShopStyle Collective – Girl, if you’re not on ShopStyle then what are you doing? I’m obsessed! Ever seen shoppable widgets in posts like this and this? Well, those babies are made with ShopStyle! It’s also a great way to stay up to date with sales and fashion trends as well.

Influenster – When I first started, this blog was mostly beauty centric and Influenster helped fuel that fire. As far as influence network’s go, Influenster is a great one for bloggers just starting out, those looking to score some cool stuff, or if you’re looking to supplement your content a bit. I like to use the app not only to keep up with the requirements of each campaign but also to stay active within the network easily which can increase your chances of participating in future campaigns. You can check out a some of my recent work with Influenster here and here.

HootSuite – When it comes to scheduling services, I’m a HootSuite girl. I’ve tried Buffer in the past but I somehow always manage to come back to HootSuite. I like the app because it makes scheduling tweets especially easily even though I usually end up using the desktop version for Facebook posts.

bitly – Sure you can shorten links with HootSuite but I still manage to find bitly helpful too. In fact, I really love just using it to save links from my desktop that I might want to check out or share on my phone. You can also track stats and create custom links through the app.

Canva – Okay, so I have to be perfectly honest here, I don’t actually like the new Canva app for iPhone. It’s actually kinda difficult to fully edit on but that’s okay because I’ve found another use for it. I’m a big fan of using Canva’s desktop version to create pinnable images and graphics for my blog as well as quotes and images for Instagram but sometimes I hate downloading the image, saving it, and figuring out how to get it to my phone to use for Instagram. That problem is solved with the Canva for iPhone app. I just hop on there and all my designs are right at my fingertips! BONUS: If you find the need to edit on the go but can’t get along with Canva for iPhone, try Canva for iPad instead. It’s very similar to the desktop version and way more accessible in my opinion.

9 Must Have Apps for Bloggers on Monogrammed Magnolias

Fly Mind Free – My new favorite way to brainstorm ideas. I even used it to construct this post. It’s pretty much the same thing as those brainstorming charts you made in fourth grade english class before writing your personal narrative paper. Personally, I’m a sucker for nostalgia so I love everything about connecting all the little bubbles back to the main idea. Definitely worth a try, especially if you’re brainstorming on the go.

ColorStory – Bravo to the girls of A Beautiful Mess for yet another incredible photo editing app. I might even go as far as to say this one tops them all. It’s incredibly easy to use, makes editing a breeze, and adds a fun pop to any photo. What’s not to love?

9 Must Have Apps for Bloggers on Monogrammed Magnolias

POPSUGAR – Not your typical blogger tool but I use this app to keep up with all things pop culture which actually plays a huge role in my social media content. It’s also a great way to stay on top of what’s happening in the world. O better yet, what trends are waiting in the wings ready to be blogged.

Well there you have it! I hope you found something helpful in all that. What’s your favorite app? It doesn’t even have to be blog related. Let me know in the comments and be sure to follow me on Twitter for more must-haves!

Halloween Costume Ideas + Link Up on Monogrammed Magnolias

The countdown is officially on, y’al1! There are only three more weekends until Halloween weekend! You know what that means? It’s costume planning time. I’ve gathered together some of my favorite costume ideas from Halloween-brainstorming headquarters…aka Pinterest…to get your creative juices flowing!

Got a Halloween related post? Link it down below, interact with other blogs in the linkup, and be sure to share this post here!

Bad Sandy

How freaking cute is Gigi Hadid as Bad Sandy from Grease? Classic!

The Joker

Everyone and their freaking sister is going to be Harley Quinn this year (that’s not a dig, you be the best Harley you can be, girl) so why not switch it up and be the female Joker? It’ll make a great photo op.

Chanel from Scream Queens

How perfect is this? It’s the new Cher from Clueless costume, I’m telling you!

Let’s face it, the world is a little pineapple crazy right now and you know what they say. If you can’t beat ’em you might as well join ’em.

Belle from Beauty & the Beast

I imagine this as the perfect costume for an elementary school teacher. Great modest option!

I freaking love this cactus…I don’t even know why, I just do. It’s great!

Who doesn’t want to be a mermaid? Halloween is the perfect time to live out that fantasy.

Wonder Woman, Gal Gadot style

Currently, there is no one in the whole wide world I want to be more than Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. So obviously, she made it on my list of Halloween costume ideas.

Audrey Hepburn

There’s so many great Audrey options to choose from. I especially like this comfy look from Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Great DIY look.

Britney Spears

Another look with tons of options! You could pull a pure 90s “Baby One More Time” move or go all out with the VMAs “Slave 4 U” look.

 Hillary Clinton

Someone’s gotta do it, it might as well be you!

Louise Belcher from Bob’s Burgers

In my honest opinion, Louise was created to be a Halloween costume. So perfect and absolutely hilarious!

Barb from Stranger Things

Go on, be the life of the party. Be Barb!

Marty McFly from Back to the Future

I might be the biggest Back to the Future fan ever…well, as least the biggest born after it premiered and because of that, I kinda wanna be Marty for Halloween.

What are you planning on wearing this Halloween? Let me know in comments and be sure to follow me on Twitter for more Halloween preparations! Oh and don’t forget to link your Halloween posts down below!

25 Wishes for My 25th Year

25 Wishes for My 25th Year -- My Birthday Blog Post on Monogrammed Magnolias

Does anyone else get really weird about birthdays? I’ve always been the girl that has a big countdown to her birthday. You know, the one that leaps out of bed in the morning just to put the one-day-closer X through the date on the calendar.

Not this year. In fact, I didn’t realize my birthday was so close until my roommate & I went to lunch with one of her teammates. She was talking about plans for her own birthday “next Monday.” I have a thing for fellow Libras and people born in October (no joke) so I asked, “Oh, when’s your birthday?”

“October 3rd.”

“No way! Mine too!” Instant friends.

Then it sunk in. Holy crap, my birthday is coming up. Oh no, am I really about to turn 25? I haven’t had time to properly prepare!

I wallowed in the agony of my impending decent into mid-twenties for about a week. Honestly, it still stings a bit but as it turns out, wallowing is not fun. Plus, I don’t want to be that girl. The one that dreads her birthday or cringes every time she has to say her age. Instead, I want to hold on tight to that Eloise-like splendor I used to feel in the days leading up to October 3rd. (PS – if you don’t know who Eloise is then I don’t know if we can still be friends.)

So, in hopes of returning to that blissful optimism of birthdays past, here is a list of 25 wishes for my 25th year…

  1. Kate Spade watch – Did you expect this to be all about the cutesy, “peace on earth” wishes? What can I say? I’m a material girl in a material world.
  2. Success – I’m not expecting ALL the gold and glory by the end of the year but some…maybe even a chunk, would be nice.
  3. Kindness – There should just be more kindness in the world. We shouldn’t build a wall around the country and I shouldn’t jump down my sister’s throat every time we disagree. Approaching life with more kindness should help with that.
  4. A President I can be proud of – Speaking of walls (*side eye emoji*), I hope by this time next year we have a president that I can be proud of. Or at least one I won’t want wish to be erased from the history books.
  5. Adventure – I don’t know what sort of adventure I’m hoping for but make it a good one. Maybe I’ll do more traveling. Or maybe I’ll pull a Helene and moved across the world! We’ll see.
  6. Comfort – Moving out (& only getting paid for 1 week in August even though I worked all 4, ugh) has really put a strain on me financially this year. So I hope to find a bit more comfort and stability in being 25. Maybe that counteracts the wish for adventure but it’s my birthday so just go with it.
  7. Marshall’s and/or Home Goods gift card – Like I said before, new apartment + financial strain = sad Merisa but some throw pillows and new druzy drawer pulls would make a very happy Merisa.
  8. Sephora gift card – You know what would go great with those druzy drawer pulls? An $80 highlight powder, that’s what.
  9. Happiness – Don’t worry, I haven’t left the beauty pageant answer type wishes behind just yet This year, I hope to find true, unadulterated, smile-from-your-soul happiness.
  10. … – I wish to extend the above wish to my momma, sister, and best friends as well Happiness all around, ladies!
  11. Health – Good health is always appreciated and kinda makes all the above wishes more enjoyable so yea, I would like to wish for good health in the coming year.
  12. Opportunity – I’ve been blessed with incredible opportunities this year so it’d kinda be crazy not to wish for that streak to continue, right?
  13. A really good hair stylist – Let’s face it, a good hair stylist is hard to come by and my hair is in desperate need of the expert treatment. Plus, finding a go-to hair stylist just seems like such a mid-twenties thing to do.
  14. Serenity – wait for it…
  15. Courage – wait for it…
  16. Wisdom – Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.
  17. Chloe boots – Hey, a girl can dream!
  18. More fun with my friends – After college, it seemed like it would take all the king’s men to get me and my friends together again. I’d like that to stop this year. Fun with friends should definitely be a more frequent occurrence in my life. There’s no need to waste time not having fun.
  19. The old Instagram algorithm to return – I can’t be the only one.
  20.  Balance – After all, I am a Libra and that’s kind our number one priority in life. I’d like to spend this year less frantic and more content and I think balance is the key to that wish.
  21. Quay x Desi High Key sunnies – Are these not the most sought after sunglasses of the year? It’d be a downright miracle if I managed to get my hands on them so maybe a wish will help them land in my hands soon.
  22. Tinted windows in my car – Superficial? Maybe but it just really bugs me that my windows aren’t tinted.
  23. Love – Don’t you think 25 sounds like a good age for an old fashion love story? Could be fun.
  24. A really good chocolate cake – uuuhhhhh, birthday cake! The best part about birthdays if you ask me.
  25. More wishes – Just kidding! Actually, it was kind of hard to come up with 25…I’ll take that as a good thing, a sign of a heart filled with content.

Cheers, to the next chapter of my life! It’s gonna be a good one, I can feel it.

DIY 90s Cartoon Ring Holder

DIY 90s Cartoon Ringer Holder on Monogrammed Magnolias

I’m a jewelry junkie. I was crazy about Claire’s growing up but now I’ve graduated to more serious pieces. You know, the big girl stuff that needs to be taken care of instead of just thrown around my room. To tell you the truth, sometimes the bazillion catchall trays I have laying around just don’t cut it. That’s where this DIY 90s Cartoon Ring Holder comes into play.

Let’s just take a moment to talk about where this crazy idea came from. In case you didn’t know, I work at an antique store (aka my side hustle) and we get vintage toys in all the time. I was unpacking stock one day when I found a few Looney Tunes figurines. They were from the year I was born and I’m a Space Jam fan so I couldn’t let them go. I ended up standing them around the register and when I had to take my ring off so I could clean something, Bugs’ arms were just begging to hold it. That’s when my imagination went wild.

DIY 90s Cartoon Ring Holder on Monogrammed Magnolias

What You’ll Need

In fact, there’s only 2 steps. All you’ll need to make your own ring holder is:

A toy figurine (anything that you think can hold rings or jewelry will work)

Hot glue gun & glue sticks

Metal lids (I used lids from small Bath & Body Works candles but you can experiment)

Spray paint (color is your choice, of course)

Box, newspaper, or drop cloth to protect work surface during spray painting

DIY 90s Cartoon Ring Holder on Monogrammed Magnolias

Step One

Once you have all your materials together then it’s time to glue your figure to the lid or stand. I just used a hot glue gun for this step but super glue will probably work just fine too. Daffy was actually positioned to where he could stand on one leg which I thought was fun so I ended up only gluing one foot to the stand. You can always mess around with the placement a bit before you glue. This is really a DIY project that you can make entirely your own.

DIY 90s Cartoon Ring Holder on Monogrammed Magnolias

Step Two

Once the glue dries you’re ready to spray paint your stand. I chose to paint mine gold because that’s the accent color in my room but you can do whatever color you want! Then gather up your stand, spray paint, and something to protect your work area and head to a well ventilated area.

DIY 90s Cartoon Ring Holder on Monogrammed Magnolias

I ended up using an old Sephora Play! box and some cardboard to protect everything from the spray paint and it seemed to work really well. Once you’ve given your ring holder a good coat of paint be sure to allow ample time to dry. Nothing’s worse than thinking spray paint is dry only to leave finger prints behind in tacky paint because that’s almost impossible to retouch. Trust me.

Finished Product

Once everything is dry then you’re ready to start piling on the rings. It’s really that simple! I love these ring holders so much that I’m always keeping a lookout for more toys at work that I can use to make more. It’s the new catchall obsession! Plus, let’s face it…the 90s are totally back and I can’t get enough of it!

National Voter Registration Day

National Voter Registration Day on Monogrammed Magnolias

Did you catch that debate last night? It was a real cringe. Personally, I’ve already made my decision of who to vote for come November so I didn’t feel the need (nor did I have the stomach) to sit through that whole excruciating ordeal. (which us really sad but that’s a topic for another day) However, the debate did make me realize one thing. There has never been a more important election in my entire life.

At (nearly) 25, I’ve seen four presidents in my lifetime, two democrats and two republicans. From where I sit now, none of them were all that bad. In fact, some were even great while all of them instilled much needed change in their country. That’s what I want in my next president. The qualifications to not only be great while holding the highest office in the land but the ability to evoke change for the betterment of the people they serve.

Enough about me, what about you? What are your top priorities this election? Do you know what’s at stake? Are you a college student bogged down by impending student loans? Are you a single mother who can’t afford proper child care? Are you a female making 75 cents to every dollar made by your male counterparts?

This election has the power to change all of that. For better or for worse.

Come November we all have a huge role to play. We get the incredible opportunity of stepping into the voting booth and making our very own decision as to who we think should be the next leader of our country, the next voice of our nation, the next President of the United States of America.

However, you can only take part in that opportunity…or right, really, as granted by the US Constitution, if and only if you are registered to vote. Now let’s take a quick moment for a little check up.

Option 3

WHAT ARE YOU EVEN DOING?! Go here immediately! Like right now! Every vote counts and your country needs you!

National Voter Registration Day on Monogrammed MagnoliasAre you still unsure of what to do? Is it all just a bit too much? Yea, I get it but here’s the deal, the next President is going have a lot on their plate.

The next President is going to have an international relations shitshow on their hands dealing with everything from Brexit to ISIS, oh and let’s not forget the profusion of racial unrest on domestic grounds. The next President is going to potentially nominate multiple justices to the Supreme Court of the United States. The next President could potentially sign bills into law that could rebuild education, provide healthcare, lower student debt, improve parental leave, shrink the gender gap, address climate change, and endless more. That’s a lot of plates, no matter how you look at it and how the next President deals with all of that affects not only you and those around you but generations not even born yet

Sounds pretty daunting right? Well, it’s simple really. We, as informed and responsible citizens, just have to vote for the candidate we believe to be most qualified for the position. That’s our part in it all and it shouldn’t be taken for granted.

Don’t waste this opportunity to make history. Register to vote today!

Beauty Review: PLAY! by Sephora

Beauty Review: Play! by Sephora on Monogrammed Magnolias

I’m a huge fan of subscription services from fashion, jewelry, even food but one of my favorite categories by far is probably pretty obvious if you’ve been around these parts for a while. It’s beauty, of course. I’ve tried out a few different beauty subscriptions but always ended up finding fault with them at some point. That hasn’t stopped me from trying to find the perfect one though.

That’s why I was excited to find out that Sephora has started their own subscription service called Play! Much like other beauty subscriptions Sephora’s box is $10 a month and features a collection of 5 deluxe samples plus a fragrance sample that they consider a bonus. However, each box also includes an adorably chic cloth bag plus a card you can use in store for “free expert advice” as well as a pull-out filled with how-tos and expert tips for each of the products. Oh and extra bonus the card gets you 50 extra points at Sephora with any purchase.

Before I get to talking about the products let’s talk a bit about the actual service. I don’t know if this is true for everyone or if it’s still even an issue but the waitlist they put you on when you first sign up is ridiculous. I’m pretty sure I was on it for at least two months before getting an email saying that I was “invited to Play!”

Then the shipping is a bit weird. You’re charged during the first week of the month but your box doesn’t ship until the third week. Once I didn’t get my box until the beginning of the next month because things were lagging a bit. That’s probably out of their hands but it’s not fun.

With all that being said, I still love finding that black and white striped box on my door step each month. I’m sure it’s because I’m a Sephora junkie but there’s just something about this box that seems a bit elevated than the rest in style and quality. Especially when it comes to the products…

The Products

Sephora Collection Rouge Shine Lipstick in love spell – Such a cute little sample to start with. It’s small but better than a little plastic bubble pack sample. This came in a great, flattering pink shade and I really liked the lipstick, rich and moisturizing just as promised. Fun little tidbit: this product is cruelty free.

Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Night Cap Overnight Perfector – At first I thought, “oh I don’t really do styling creams.” Come to find out this product is more than just a styling cream, it’s a perfector. What does that mean exactly? Well it’s meant to add shine, vibrancy, and manageablity to your hair overnight. Sounds like a winner to me!

Well, upon first use of this product, I was thrown off by the smell. If I’m being honest, it smelt a bit like my dog’s flea shampoo which isn’t all that attractive. However, I moved past it when I woke up the next morning and my hair was laying in beautiful, shiny, curls and the smell was completely gone. I’m not saying any miracles were performed. My hair is naturally wavy but usually the curls and waves I wake up with look more like I’ve just come back from a night of sleeping on the forest floor rather than a satin pillow.

Kat Von D Tattoo Liner in Trooper – One of my all time favorite products so I was happy to see a travel friendly version in this month’s box. What can I say? If you’re looking for a great liquid liner, perfect for a cat eye flick this product is what you want.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Gel – Another product I actually already own but also one that can always find a place in my makeup bag, the Brow Queen’s very own brow gel. Great for keeping stray hairs and rowdy brows in place.

Dr. Jart+ Water Drop Hydrating Moisturizer – I’m a huge fan of Dr. Jart+ but I have to say I’ve only ever tried their products via samples because, well, they are expensive. So needless to say, I was excited to find this moisturizer in this month’s box. I was impressed with the size of the sample seeing as the full size at $36 is only 3.3 fl. oz. So you could technically argue that at 1 fl. oz. this sample pays for the whole box. After using it a few nights before bed and under my makeup once or twice I can say that I’m a little confused as to why this found it’s way into the September box. Sure, it’s lightweight and hydrating but that seems more appropriate for a summer time box to me. Still enjoyable though so maybe that’s just me being nit picky.

Tory Burch Jolie Fleur Verte – I’m a big Tory Burch fan but I’ve never tried her fragrances, which made me really appreciate that Sephora decided to toss in fragrance samples as a bonus. This particular scent is described to be “a tomboy and easygoing mix.” Two things I am not but I do appreciate a bit of tomboy in my fragrances. However, I didn’t get tomboy from this sample at all. It’s very floral to me. Which isn’t all that surprising considering the name literally means “Nice Green Flower” in French. I’m just not into floral scents but hey, now I know that this one isn’t for me so I can pass it on to my mom or roomies and give another Tory scent a shot.

Overall, I’m loving this subscription so far. It’s perfect for loyal Sephora girls or anyone who just loves to try out new products without laying down the big bucks just yet. I think I’ll let it stick around a bit longer. Who knows what the next box will bring after all? You can sign up for Play! here to try it for yourself.
