The Sunday Six

Happy October, y’all!

October is my favorite month of the year for countless reasons (it’s my birthmonth for one!) so I thought it would be fun to kick off the month with the introduction of a new series…The Sunday Six! It’s most likely exactly what you think it is, a count of my favorite things at the moment. I’m actually pretty late to the party on this one so let’s just get to it before it comes the Monday Many (not cute).

In case you haven’t heard, Tara from Beaus and Bows and I are hosting a photo-a-day challenge over on Instagram. You can find the prompt and today’s post right here. Feel free to follow along and use the hashtag #BoosAndBows. I can’t wait to see how creative we can get with each day’s prompt. If you join in, you might even find yourself featured right here on Magnolia Moon.

The Catch Up

I went out to celebrate my birthday a little early last night (it’s on Tuesday). Honestly, it was probably the first time I’d been out to a bar with my friends like that since college and at the risk of sounding like the “mom friend” that I am, it was surprisingly fun! We did everything you’d expect from a group of girls in a bar. Group bathroom selfies, the shot wheel, too many mixed drinks, obnoxious flash selfies, we even yelled “Free Bird” at the band. That last one is probably just a Southern girl thing but you get the picture. Later on in the night we met up with a group of guys we went to school with and my best friend and I realized a few of us had known each other for over 23 years. That’s longer than my little sister, who was also there, has been alive! I loved every minute of catching up with everyone and can’t wait to do it again…in a few weeks because, you know, balance.

Lip Paint

Sephora recently had Tarte’s Tarteist Lip Paint on the Weekly Wow for $11 so I snatched up 2 different shades, Deep Nude and Killin’ It. They’re pretty typical as far as liquid lipsticks go but I do feel a slight difference in the level of comfort on my lips compared to a formula like the Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks. I’m a fan of both but Tarte does feel a bit more comfortable for everyday wear.

Pumpkin Spice on Ice

This is really my first year diving into the whole Pumpkin Spice thing and I have to say…I regret nothing. Currently I’m obsessed with iced pumpkin spice lattes because even if it is October it’s still 80-90 degrees on any given day so ice is necessary. I also hit Trader Joe’s wide open and snatched up Pumpkin Waffles, Pumpkin Crisps, and Pumpkin Ravioli. All were life changing and highly recommended.

I’ve been traveling to Louisville, Kentucky once a month for about four months now for doctor’s appointments and I’m realizing that I’m pretty much falling in love with the city. So this is more of a call to action than a favorite pick but if you have any travel guides to Louisville or happen to live there, let me know! It’s made it’s way onto my list of possible cities to live in and I want to know all I can about the city.

What’s the Tee

I’ve had a strong love for RuPaul since he played the Witches Council judge on Sabrina the Teenage Witch circa 1997. With that being said, I tend to listen to a lot of true crime or political podcasts that can weigh pretty heavy on the heart sometimes. That’s where RuPaul: What’s the Tee comes in. It’s a laugh every damn time. It’s honestly become my fool-proof, instant pick-me-up method. I’ve even started listening to episodes over again. I’ve probably heard the ep with Katya at least 3 times now. Also, there is no sound more precious than the cackle of RuPaul, it gets me every time.

There ya have it, y’all. A little rushed, a little thrown together but that’s the beauty of it. Stay tuned for more of The Sunday Six soon and in the mean time, be sure to follow me on Instagram for the #BoosAndBows challenge.

5 Steps I Take to Recharge and Get Back to Being Me

5 Steps I Take to Recharge and Get Back to Being Me
Hello, Magnolias.

We’ve almost made it through another week…praise hand emojis all around, am I right?

This week has been particularly trying because, well, I’ve been sick for most of it. That can really put a damper on life, especially when you’re so sick you can’t walk to and from the kitchen without running out of breath.

After a week of downing gallons of tomato soup and multiple medications, I’m back to feeling semi-normal. While all that soup and meds did my body good, my mental state was still a little fuzzy from the fever and coughing. I’ve been taking some serious steps to get back to 100% Me and I thought I would take a minute to share some of those things with y’all. They’re super easy and actually perfect for anytime you need a Me moment.

Step 1 – Light a Candle.

Simple, I know, but I find candlelight genuinely calming especially when it comes in the form of a great smelling candle such as White Barn’s Mahogany Teakwood. It smells like a ridiculously hot guy just walked into the room and wrapped you in his favorite warm jacket.

Step 2 – Bath Time

Probably my favorite part of the whole process. For this particular relaxing bath, I grabbed my favorite macaron shaped bath bombs, lavender & eucalyptus essential oils (to relax and sooth my sinuses), and an ice cold Sprite then went to town with the bubbles. The Sprite is, of course, optional but I highly recommend the oils. If you’re not into essential oils then I highly suggest investing in a great bath & body oil. I use Carol’s Daughter’s Almond Cookie Oil, which seems to be discontinued, but it smells incredible and makes your skin silky smooth without having to go through the pain of moisturizing afterward. If you can find it, you should definitely pick it up.

Step 3 – It’s All About the Face

Aside from the usual makeup and product I put on my face, being sick and out of it can really take it’s toll too. That’s why I really take a whole step to focus on my face and get everything back to basics. I also love to take the opportunity to be a bit indulgent. That’s where Origins Modern Friction Gentle Dermabrasion and GlamGlow YouthCleanse Mud to Foam Cleanser come to play. A great combo to rid your skin of all that dull dryness.

Step 4 – Paint Ya Nails

Nothing makes me feel more pulled together than having my nails painted. That’s why this is a step even through being sick in bed. My favorite polish is, you guessed it, OPI’s Lincoln Park After Dark. I talk about this all the time and for good reason, it’s a wonderful dark purple that checks all the boxes for me. Well, maybe not all the boxes, it still takes a bit to dry but I’ve got that covered with Essence Express Dry Drops. These things are my new favorite (hint: keep an eye out for more on these tomorrow) and for $2.99 I can’t get enough.

Step 5 – Take a Moment to Breath

This is easier said than done sometimes but after I’ve went through all the steps above, I love nothing more than crawling into bed and listening to something calming but also useful. At the moment, that combination comes from the She Percolates podcast. I love listening to Danielle and Jen break down the different perspectives of success over a cup of coffee. Danielle seems to be so laid back while Jen speaks with such excitement in her voice that they compliment each other perfectly and make for easy listening…pun not intended.

After all that, I can’t help but feel more like Me. It’s all about doing the things that you find both relaxing and enjoyable.

Inspiration for the Week

That’s Jen Gotch, co-founder of everyone’s favorite accessory brand, Isn’t she the cutest?

I found this image on Pinterest earlier and felt it really resonate with me. I clicked through to discover that the image was connected to a post and subsequent podcast known as The Lively Show on

The episode was centered around the art of relaxation and creativity from Jen’s standpoint as a Creative Director and all around girl’s girl. I was instantly intrigued.

In the interview Jen talks about the vast range of more traditional jobs she took on before realizing her calling was in more creative endeavors as well as the changes she’s went through since.

I think this quote can mean a variety of things to a variety of people, especially seeing as change is on everyone’s mind with the new year maturing.

Personally, I’m going to take this quote as a lovely reminder that just because something I hold dear (whether that’s an event, a project, or even a friendship) ends that doesn’t mean that that part of my life is over. An ending only brings way for a new beginning.

I hope you all have a fantastic week ahead with new doors opening and pages turning all around you.

Five Favorites

I’m going to be honest here…I had know idea what to write today.

Surprised? Eh, probably not, right?

Well, I sat down and got to thinking about things I’ve been loving lately thinking that might inspire me.

Then a flood of things just came to me. I’ve gotten to the point that I just don’t like writing monthly favorites anymore. I’ve always tried to do them a little differently (remember What We Love Wednesdays, anyone?) but they just started to get out of hand. I might still work on that though but in the meantime I thought we could try this…

A list of my five favorite things. Beauty, fashion, music, movies, tv…anything and everything!

So let’s get to it.

1. Serial podcast || I know, I know. I mentioned this in Around the Web earlier this week but I just can’t help it because this truly is one of my favorite things this week. I listened to 3 whole episodes yesterday which lead to me cleaning my whole room while I was listening. That’s amazing! I’m completely caught up though because I actually stopped myself from finishing the last episode because I didn’t want it to end. That’s right, I stopped listening because I couldn’t bear the thought of not having anything to listen to until tomorrow. How ridiculous.

2. American Horror Story: Coven has arrived on Netflix! Yayyyyyyyyy!

That was my exact reaction when the notification came across my phone. If you know me at all then you probably know that Coven is my absolute favorite season (you can learn more about my obsession here). I’m so excited to start the season all over again I can hardly stand it. UPDATE: I’m four episodes in and it’s still Wednesday.

3. H&M Bag || Yes, I am about to be that girl. You know, the one who goes on and on about what kind of bag she’s carrying. I’m perfectly okay with that though because I freaking love this bag!

It’s cute, right? It’s out of stock online but here is a similar style and similar price.

I found it while shopping on H&M’s site during Black Friday because I had actually been looking for this bag but the bag I ended up getting was half price and pretty much exactly the same, except for the hardware. I’m loving it but I won’t bore you with all that I could say so I’ll just end it here.

4. CLINQUE Black Honey || The 90s revival is in full force, folks.

I almost died when I saw this little sample in a gift bag from Sephora because, get ready for a trip here, my babysitter used to wear Black Honey and I just thought it was the most wonderful, grownup thing you could ever do. So, having this little guy in my possession is not only a blast from the past but also wish fulfillment at it’s finest. Does this mean I’m a grown up, guys? My 5 year old self would be so proud.

5. This isn’t really a favorite but it is absolutely hilarious.

I can hear so much going on outside through my window that I actually just sang along to a whole verse of Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy” from my 2nd floor bedroom while a car was playing it at the stop sign by the corner.

I also get to hear 2 school buses pick up kids each morning and drop them of each evening. That kind of frequency leads to such gems as a kid yelling “Hey Kayla, tell your mom she got a big ass!!!” Poor Kayla. I laughed my butt off but still, poor Kayla.

until next time,

PS: Isn’t winter just the worst time to take pictures? I was just laughing at my crappy little setup with the pink blanket background and candle light lighting setup. Oh well, bear with me.

Around the Web: Serial, Vlogging, and a 90s Throwback

Vlogmas || Vlogging everyday up til Christmas has started on my of my favorite YouTube channels and I just can’t get enough. Some of my absolute favorites so far have been Lily Pebbles, Hello October, and Sprinkle of Glitter’s Sprinkle of Chatter. These ladies have been up to some very cool things already this month and I have enjoyed living vicariously through them this week.

I’m obsessed with the Cinderella trailer || Have you seen the trailer for Disney’s live-action Cinderella? You totally should. It’s wondrous. I just can’t stop watching. First of all, I am in love with the idea of Helena Bonham Carter as the Fairy Godmother. That alone makes it epic. I’m pretty sure I’m just going to keep the trailer on repeat until it actually hits theaters in 2015.

Jon Stewart responds to the Eric Garner decision || If you haven’t seen it yet then you must click the link to watch Jon Stewart’s reaction to the decision not to indict a NYC police officer for killing Eric Garner in a chokehold. (if you have no idea what I’m talking about I have to assume you have literally been living under a rock for the last month or you are a time traveler. Either way, educate yourself.) The Daily Show was just about to start filming when the news broke and as you can tell in the clip, Stewart, like many Americans, was having a tough time processing it all. I just think it was nice to see a truly human reaction to something so inhumane.

To My Unborn Son || If you enjoyed Jon Stewart’s reaction then you will mostly likely adore this one.  This comes as a reaction to the death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, MO. The Yale College Black Men’s Union took to Tumblr to share hand written messages about life to their unborn son. The messages range from warm words of advice to hopes for change in the future. Here are some that either gave me chills or were too heart-warming not to share.

Pantone’s Color of the Year is a total throwback || On a lighter note, Pantone has named it’s Color of the Year. The color is named Marsala and I am in love. First of all, I feel like I’ve been drawn to this sort of dark, maroony, wine color all season long. Plus, it is totally in line with that brown toned pinkish red color that we’ve all been reliving the 90s with. I’m looking forward to this being everywhere in the coming year, especially if Sephora does a collection like they did with the green color last year.

Fall Fashion Trend Quiz || I had throw this in there because it was just so fun. Refinery 29 has compiled a Fall Fashion Trend Quiz and you’ve just got to try it out to see what trend you should try out this season.

Serial || Is everybody listening to Serial? I can understand if they are because it is seriously addictive. I find myself turning it on every time I got to do the dishes or make dinner. i think I’m on episode 8 right now but I’m trying to pace myself. This could easily take over my life if I let it, I just know it. I have some real issues with it so far. On one hand, I love it. I feel like me listening to a murder mystery from my phone with no visuals is like my granddad sitting around a fire listening to The Maltese Falcon on the radio. Then again I think what a story like this must mean during times like these. I mean there are points in the story when even I’m a little skeptical and untrusting of police authorities. With so many sour emotions toward authorities being brought up by the cases I mentioned earlier I can’t help but wonder if this podcast is helping or hurting (or even involved at all). I’m not sure how I feel about it all just yet.  Leave me a comment below if you listen to the podcasts and share your thoughts too.

until next time,
