Beauty Trend: Vampy Lips

Beauty Trend: Vampy Lips on Monogrammed Magnolias

Nothing says autumn beauty to me more than a dark, vampy lip. A dark lip color can be a bit intimidating at times though. That’s why I wanted to walk you through this mega trend and show off a few of my favorites. I’ve got everything from matte to glossy, practically black to shades of berry. There’s something here for everyone so if you’re looking to join in or just wanting to try something new, keep reading!

Urban Decay Vice Lipstick in Hex

I’m obsessed with all of the Urban Decay Vice Lipsticks but Hex really hits the spot when it comes to fun, Fall colors. As a Mega Matte shade Hex is not only long lasting but it’s super comfortable too. What’s not to love?

Smashbox Be Legendary Lip Lacquer in Bordeaux

Something for the glossy girls that’s just about as dark and delicious as they come. This Lip Lacquer is long wearing so it’ll take you through even the craziest of Halloween parties.

Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Damned

Back to the matte-est of mattes with this one. I’m a big Kat Von D liquid lipstick fan. In fact, they’re probably my favorite ones on the market. I was feeling adventurous when I picked up Damned

L’Oreal Color Riche Extraordinaire Lip Color in 502

I have to admit, what most attracts me to this lip color is the packaging. That’s okay though because it’s actually a really great shade! It’s glossy yet comfortable and perfectly fits into the vampy trend.

Tarte Lip Surgence Lip Tint in Moody

Consider this a lip color for all the baby vamps out there. If you’re just getting your feet wet with the trend then I suggest a little Moody to get you started. First of all, it’s incredibly easy to apply as it comes in lip crayon then it’s a great dark berry shade that flatters just about every skin tone. You can’t go wrong.

Favorite Beauty Products of 2015

Hello, Magnolias.

One of my unspoken goals of 2016 is to actually bring back more beauty related posts, so I thought I’d get the ball rolling with a look back at my favorite beauty products of 2015.

– Primer –

I didn’t actually use a primer for the majority of the year but I did enjoy using the Smashbox Photo Finish Primer Water while I had it. So much so that I actually repurchased it after Christmas. I even have a full review you can check out here.

– Foundation –

Too Faced Born this Way Foundation…hands down! I used this foundation for most of the year and actually just only started using another recently because the shade I have is a little too dark for me now. It’s still amazing thought and I miss it.

– Concealer –

Just like last year, the Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Eraser Concealer is my top concealer. I’d even go so far as to say this is actually a holy grail product. I just love how it’s so blendable and easy to apply.

– Powder –

Coty Air Spun Powder is amazing for the few occasions that I wear powder like that time I tried “baking.” It smells nice, practically melts into my skin, and doesn’t leave me cakey. I also really liked learning about vintage Coty from Lisa Eldridge this year.

– Blush –

I actually have two in this category, the first is BECCA Beach Tint Shimmer Souffle in Fig/Opal which is an incredible cream blush mixed with BECCA’s classic Opal Shimmering Skin Perfector all in one. I love with color for my fairer winter skin and the lovely shimmer is a fun touch. My second favorite blush is Too Faced Love Flush Blush in Justify My Love. It’s just a great pink that’s perfect for any skin tone.

– Highlighter –

Hands down, it’s BECCA x Jaclyn Hill Shimmering Skin Perfecter in Champagne Pop. I mean, have you seen it? It’s pretty much the only highlighter I use and after seeing a ton of beauty girls on YouTube break their’s I protect mine like a child.

– Eyeshadow –

It’s hard to narrow down an eyeshadow favorite for the whole year but if I had to choose it would be Stila’s Kitten simply because of the versatility. A great allover shimmery, pale gold shadow that works as an even better highlighter shade.

– Liner –

I am oh so happy to tell you that my favorite eyeliner of the year is a life changer and it only costs $3. Yep, that’s right only 3 bucks. The e.l.f. Cream Eyeliner is the best potted eyeliner I’ve ever used. It’s surprisingly easy to apply, the blackest black, and has yet to dry out. Winning all around.

– Mascara –

Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara is probably my favorite mascara of life actually. It’s pretty much ruined me when it comes to mascara, no other even compares now. It’s that good.

– Brows –

I picked up the NYX Micro Brow Pencil after running out of the Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz and I have to say I prefer the NYX version simply because of the price point. It’s half the price of the Brow Wiz which means I don’t have to worry about shelling out 20 bucks every time I run out. However, every time I got into Ulta they are always sold out of my shade (Ash Brown, btw) so I’ve been using NYX Tame & Frame Tinted Brow Pomade as a substitute in the meantime.

– Lips –

This was a doozy and I’m honestly surprised I was able to narrow things down to a top 5.

Essence Nude Longlasting Lipstick in Cool Nude – I’m just going to get this out of the way first…this lipstick is only $2.99. Even better than the price is the actual formulation. So smooth and long lasting while filling my need for a great dark, pinky nude.

Revlon ColorBurst Matte Balm in Shameless  – Let me start off my saying that I believe they actually discontinued this shade right after I bought it and I’m pretty upset about that fact because I can’t find it anywhere now. It’s such a fun purple shade that I love wearing out in the evenings (or in fun selfies) and it’s the first purple lipstick to not make my teeth look yellow. Score!

Kat Von D Studded Kiss Lipstick in Lovecraft – When I want really long lasting matte lips, I head straight for Kat Von D and this little studded lipstick does not disappoint. I love the smooth application and the trendy grey toned pinky brown shade.

Too Faced Melted Liquified Lipstick in Melted Nude – My go-to for a nude liquid lip. I love that it’s not a full matte finish that nourishing on my lips and the nude color has a hint of pinky brown (notice a trend?) so that it doesn’t give me concealer lips.

NARS Matte Velvet Lip Pencil in Cruella – If you managed to snag the Sephora Beauty Insiders birthday gift in 2015 then you probably know the wonder that is Cruella. It’s just the perfect, long lasting red lip and I am so obsessed that the full size version is patiently waiting in my online cart ready to be purchased. Sephora really knew what they were doing there.

November Wish List

Hello, Magnolias.

I know I’m not the only one feeling the money crunch right now. It’s just that time of year. We’re saving up money for the holidays, going out of town, and getting gifts for others but in the midst of that madness are incredible sales and sparkly gift sets that can just make a girl weak in the knees. So while I’m sitting here counting down the hours left in the Sephora VIB Sale and temporarily putting a preventative freeze on my bank account, I thought I’d combat the urge to spend out by compiling a therapeutic Wish List!

Numero uno on the list isn’t even available yet, typical. The palette is a collaboration with Gwen Stefani, Urban Decay’s first ever collab, and will be available on November 22. Photo courtesy by @karisbrelsford on Instagram.

Kate Spade Cedar  Street Maise in Mulled Wine

This bag has been everywhere this year…so of course it’s at the top of my wish list.

Marc Jacobs Decadence

A perfume, shaped like a purse. Yes, please! Haha This isn’t a perfume I could see myself wearing everyday as it’s very rich and, well, decadent but that’s what wish lists are for.

Smashbox #ShapeMatters Palette

What girl couldn’t use a full face palette? The #ShapeMatters palette includes eye shadows, contour, blush, and highlight shades, as well as brow powders & wax! Talk about full service.

Draper  James Totes Y’all Vanderbilt Tote

This bag just popped back in stock and considering I’ve had my eye on it since before Draper James was even released online, it was bound to appear on this list.

NARS Satin Lip Pencil in Rikugien

My go-to lip color is quickly dwindling away but that $26 price tag is quite the bullet to bite.

Everpurse x Kate Spade Phone Charging Wristlet

As you can probably tell from #2 on this list, I’m always down for a good Kate Spade bag but throw in the fact that this particular one will actually charge your phone and I’m the first in line…figuratively speaking of course.

What’s on your wish list this month? Let me know in the comments and be sure to follow me through my social media links below (including Snapchat: @angelmerisa23).

Review: Smashbox Primer Water

Hello, Magnolias!

It’s about high time we have another review on here that isn’t a foundation so let’s all say thanks to Sandy from Lippie Obsession for suggesting I do a review of the Smashbox Photo Finish Primer Water from my latest collective haul.

I’ve been using this product for a while now and thought I would go ahead and do a proper, full review for y’all so let’s get to it.

As you can probably tell from the picture above, I have the travel size bottle which is 1 oz. You know how it goes with those little minis they put in the aisle of bankruptcy by the register, when I saw this little guy I just had to give it a try. This size retails for $16 while the larger, 3.9 oz. bottle comes in at $32. You get more product for your money with the larger size but I still like to try out travel sizes before dropping that much cash on a product I know nothing about.

I really like the packaging of this product, the bottle is made out of that heavy plastic that makes you think it’s actually glass for a split second. The cap snaps on for a secure closure but also opens easily so that you’re not struggling to get it off. All in all, it feels like quality in your hands, even for a travel size, which is incredible.

In order to apply the product you just spray it on your face prior to makeup application, like the reverse of a setting spray. The directions say “Hold bottle 8″-10″ away from face and mist evenly.” The spray is a fine mist but a lot of product comes out with each spray. However,  I don’t always feel like I can get an even coverage without doing a ton of sprays. I’ve noticed that sometimes the nozzle can twist a bit in your hand which, if you’re not careful, can led to wasting product. I usually find myself patting the product into my skin before it dries then fanning my face to help it along a bit, especially if I’m in a rush.

How it Wears

I’ve been wearing this as my only primer since I got it and it’s worked really well for me so far but I thought I would put it to the test and wear it on only one half of my face before applying a foundation that I’m familiar with. I chose the Maybelline Fit Me Foundation (full review here) because I know how it wears with and without primer which will allow me to better test the longevity of this primer water.

Like I said, I sprayed the product on only one side of my face by covering up the other half with a sheet of paper then spraying. After I let the primer water settle a bit on that one side I went right into my makeup routine so the other half of my face was bare under the makeup, aside from my moisturizer of course.

I just went about my day, out to dinner with my momma, and blogged a little when I got back home before checking on the makeup situation again. That was around 8 or 9 pm.

Let’s talk about the non-primed side first:

There was like zero makeup on my cheek and believe me I piled the concealer on. Also, I got really oily around my nose and noticed a little foundation had gathered around the curve of my nose. Not cute.

Now, the primer side didn’t seem all that different at first glance but I did notice that there wasn’t any makeup gathering around my nose. I didn’t really notice any oil on this side of my face either. In my opinion, this cheek looks better as far as blemish cover-up goes so I’m going to take that as a sign that more makeup is actually staying put for longer on the primed side.

Overall, I think this is an easy to use and fun product to try out. I’m not too hot on the price point though, so I don’t think I’ll be repurchasing it immediately but I do like it as a primer. The bottle actually says you can use it as a setting spray or refresher to “wake up your makeup.” I haven’t tried it over my makeup yet but I’ll keep you all updated if and when I do.

Have any of you tried this product before? Let me know what you think of it in the comments.

2014 Beauty Favorites

It’s time to talk about my favorite beauty products from 2014, y’all!

There was a lot. I decided to break it down into categories so let’s get started.

It was hard for me to think back on all the products I used this year but these two definitely stood out as they completely changed my skincare game.

Cleanser || LUSH Dark Angels

I fell in love with this product this year. I even wrote a full review here. LUSH classifies it as a cleanser so I did too but it truly is a scrub. It definitely pulls double duty though. I really enjoy using this product which I believe is one of the reasons why I’m more inclined to use it, making way for a more steady skincare routine.

Mask || LUSH Mask of Magnaminty and Glam Glow Thirstymud Hydrating Treatment

I was so sad to see my pot of Mask of Magnaminty come to an end. This mask is really great for calming redness and drawing out gunk from congested skin. It also has a gentle exfoliant due to the adzuki beans inside. I finished off this mask while I was battling a bit of a cold and the peppermint was extra soothing for both my skin and my sinuses. I would definitely repurchase this product but I think I’ll wait until I make my way through a few more masks I have lying around first.

I couldn’t help but throw the Glam Glow Thirstymud in since it is technically a mask too. We all know my skin is as thirsty as it gets (sorry, I couldn’t resist) so this treatment is perfect for me. I love to scrub my face, give myself a mini facial, then slather this stuff on. I wake up in the morning, wash it off, and find that my skin is soft and hydrated. I’ve also read that this is a great mask to wear while flying so I can’t wait to try that out soon. It also smells like vanilla and coconut, two of my favorite things so that doesn’t hurt.

Moisturizer || Equate Naturally Beaming Daily Moisturizer

I’ve looked long and hard for a moisturizer that works for my dry skin and one day I decided to try out an Aveeno moisturizer (I admit, mostly because Jennifer Aniston looks so flawless in those commercials). When I found what I was looking for in the aisle there happened to be this generic brand next to it, at a marginally cheaper price too. So I brought home the Equate brand and was blown away. It’s the perfect moisturizer for me. It’s light on my skin, doesn’t feel greasy, doesn’t break me out, and truly moisturizes. I’m definitely going to be picking more of this up, it might even become a Holy Grail product.

Lips || Smith’s Rosebud Salve and LUSH Popcorn Lip Scrub

The combination of these two is out of this world. I put a tad bit of salve on my lips then scrub them down with the Popcorn Lip Scrub. Right before bed I slather on some more of the rose scented salve and wake up with super soft lips. It’s the perfect formula.

Primer || Benefit’s The Porefessional

I’m not too big into primers but if I have to choose then this is my favorite. When it says it will hide large pores, it means it. I love to use this primer around my t-zone and to cover the spots I tend to get under my eyes sometimes. I don’t enjoy, however, the high price. So far, I’ve only used deluxe samples of this product. They’ve all lasted incredibly long but that still doesn’t help with the $31 price tag that comes with just 3 times the size of the mini.

Foundation || NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer

This has been my go to foundation since I purchased it. For a tinted moisturizer it really does have great, buildable coverage that lasts all day. It delivers added moisture to my dry skin without looking like my skin ate my makeup at the end of the day. Also, if you’re lucky enough to match one of the colors available in a travel size, it’s cheaper to purchase them that way.

Concealer || Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Concealer

Love. Love. Love. That’s what I have to say about this product. The sponge applicator is ingenious. The consistency is spot on. Nothing covers like this stuff does. I never find that it dries out on my skin or moves into any fine lines. It’s so good that I even picked up some from Ulta as an early Christmas present for myself before I even ran out of the one I was using at the time

Eyeshadow || Smashbox Full Exposure Travel Palette

This palette has everything. Its sleek, portable design makes it perfect for travel but the real kicker is the organization of shadows. Each shimmer comes with a coordinating matte color, leaving you with at least 4 possible combinations if you’re afraid of mixing colors. The shimmers are definitely my favorite, especially that soft gold, but I do find myself reaching for this palette when I need a really great crease color. With the mattes ranging from both warm and ashy browns to mid-tones shades you’ll have everything you need in one great palette.

Blush & Bronzer || Too Faced Everything Nice Palette

My favorite blush and bronzer of the year are actually both set in this palette. I’ve reached for both shades in this palette countless times since I got it and you can definitely tell. The Sweet Pink blush is the perfect pop of color for my skin tone, no matter the season. The bronzer in the palette has quickly become a classic in the blog world, for good reason. The Chocolate Soleil bronzer is a light matte, chocolate scented bronzer that is perfect for my medium skin tone. Oh yea, you read that right, it smells like chocolate.

Mascara || Buxom Sculpted Lash Mascara

My all time favorite mascara. You’ve probably seen this one in a monthly favorites a time or two. This was actually my first high-end mascara and my emotional attachment won’t let me stray too far from it. The S-shaped wand is unbelievable and allows for full, volumnized lashes while the formula is wet enough to not clump or flake.

Brows || Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz

This product single handedly changed how I handle my brows. Thinking about it now, I can’t even remember what I did with my brows before the Brow Wiz came into my life. The spooly end makes everything so easy while the super-thin liner end allows you to draw in practically natural looking lines to fill in any gaps or spaces in you brows. I highly, highly recommend this product if you’re looking to up your brow game, girls.

Eyeliner || Stila Stay All Day Liquid Eyeliner

Yet another Holy Grail product for me. This eyeliner will give you the ability to create a serious cat eye wing. I’ve gotten so used to its ease that it’s difficult for me to put on regular pencil liner now. The color dries down to a matte black so, for me at least, it’s the perfect eyeliner.

Lip Products

Here is where things get tricky, I couldn’t pick just one…so I picked 5.

NYX Butter Gloss in Creme Brulee || Only my favorite lip gloss of all time. Smooth, not sticky at all, and smells a bit like cake. What more can a girl ask for?

NARS Lipstick in Dolce Vita || The perfect fall nude that glides on with a satin finish that makes it a serious classic in my book.

Too Faced Melted Liquefied Lipstick in Melted Fuchsia || My birthday lipstick! A goal I set for myself in 2015 (it really should have been one of my 101 in 1001) was to find my signature lipstick shade and I think I’ve found it in this. Who doesn’t love a good hot pink lipstick?

Covergirl Jumbo Gloss Balm in Berry Twist || This was my first venture over on the dark side of lip products and it quickly became my favorite berry gloss for fall. It’s not too dark and not too red so it was perfect to wear back at school.

Revlon Colorburst Lacquer Balm in Vivacious || A fun cross between pink and red that became my signature color during the spring semester, even if Gavin laughed every time I walked in the caf wearing it. Boys just don’t understand.

Highlighter || Benefit Watt’s Up

I don’t always use a highlighter but when I do it’s this one. This product delivers a serious punch with it’s creamy, champagne-gold shimmer. I really don’t know how to express my love for this highlighter other than by saying I hands down love it!

Perfume || Clean Skin

If you read my July Favorites from 2014 then you probably excepted this to happen seeing as I ranted and raved about it in that post. Well, this year I made it my signature scent like I had planned. My friend still comments on it every time I wear it so I hold that near and dear. I have no idea how to describe it so I’ll let Sephora do the talking, “Hints of dewy flower petals wrap around notes of pure creaminess and warm musk to evoke the simple scent of touchable skin.” Sounds as amazing as it smells, I promise.

I hope you all have enjoyed this look into what products I loved in 2014. This post took a lot longer to put together than I had anticipated but that just fuels my need to be more organized this year.

I hope 2015 is being good to you so far, Magnolias. It sure has been fun so far.

December 2014 Popsugar Must Have Box Review

I just realized that I kinda stopped reviewing my POPSUGAR Must Have Boxes, which is totally not cool because they are some of my favorite things to review.

I was so excited for December’s box that I thought I would go ahead and jump back into it.

This first item I pulled out of the box was this necklace from Sparklepop. It was so sparkly my little magpie side couldn’t help but be attracted to it.

The chain is definitely longer than most necklaces I gravitate toward. According to the brand’s website it comes in around 37 inches, which makes it long enough to double loop. I’ve only had the box for about a week and I’ve worn the necklace with about 3 different outfits.

The card inside the box says that the necklace has a suggested retail price of $42.

Next came a a folded cardboard box that looked complicated to get into so of course I just had to see what was inside. Turns out it was this Canvas Dauville Platinum Bowl. Yet again, something shiny to please my little magpie heart.

My bedroom is actually done in purple and grey with mercury glass accents so this little platinum bowl will just go perfect with the rest of my decor. I’ve even used it as a tea light candle holder a few times and just love the way the light bounces off the hand-painted interior. A very nice touch especially considering that it retails for $29. I wouldn’t normally pay that much for a bowl but it does go well with the rest of my room.

When I saw the little black box with Smashbox written on the side I was so excited even before I knew what was inside. I’m a huge fan of the brand and even plan to do a possible NYE makeup tutorial using the Smashbox Full Exposure Travel Palette.

When I finally got around the opening the little black box I was pleasantly surprised to find the Smashbox Be Legendary Long-Wear Lop Lacquer. I love Smashbox packaging, everything just feels so luxury and at $24 for a lipgloss it really should feel that way. However, I was a bit disappointed by a few things.

First off the applicator is sorta crap. I give it a “sorta” because it’s actually really great for the bottom lip but freaks out when you try to do the top. It’s an oddly shaped doe-foot applicator that’s completely flat on on both sides rather than slanted on one end. My bottom lip is much bigger than my top so I had no problems using the applicator to cover until I when onto my skinny top lip. Long story short, I ended up getting the stuff everywhere.

My second complaint is the color. The more I wear it the more I like it but at first it was hard to get over Bordeaux being so vampy. It truly is a dark burgundy, wine color which I find a little harder to wear around December. However, as you will see in the picture below, it comes off as a classic red on camera. That’s definitely a festive color. So maybe my disappoints with the product will just have to take some getting used to. Either way, I really hope POPSUGAR keeps the high-end beauty products coming.

How perfect are these Knot & Bow gift tags for December? I’ve already used a couple during my gift wrapping spree and I’m sure I’ll use even more once I get some of my last minute shopping done. Their suggested retail price is $4,

Actually, if I’m telling the truth, I thought this was hot cocoa mix at first but I was just as excited to find that it was cupcake mix instead. My family loves cupcakes. We make a batch almost every weekend, mostly because my stepdad has the biggest sweet tooth I’ve ever seen. With that being said, I’m sure this Williams-Sonoma Vanilla Bean Cupcake Mix ill be greatly appreciated in my household.

I’m excited to see how they turn out considering they are meant to be gourmet and come in at about $14.95.

Have I mentioned that I love things that sparkle? Well I do and this SPUN by Subtle Luxury Speckled Metallic Scarf is right up my alley. In fact I was just thinking the other day how I had misplaced a scarf that I had that looked pretty similar to this one so I am glad to have a replacement. Especially seeing as this particular scarf is a bit more luxurious than mine from Forever 21.

Also, the scarf goes really great with the Sparklepop necklace and is very versatile. At $62 it is easily the big ticket item of the box which seems to be a trend lately.

Overall, I was happy with everything from this month’s box. The combined suggested retail price for the box came out to $175.95, meaning that you actually receive $136 worth the product for free. That’s one of the best values I’ve experienced so far.

If you’d like to learn more about the POPSUGAR Must Have Box or subscribe to one yourself just click here.

until next time,
