The Sunday Six

Happy October, y’all!

October is my favorite month of the year for countless reasons (it’s my birthmonth for one!) so I thought it would be fun to kick off the month with the introduction of a new series…The Sunday Six! It’s most likely exactly what you think it is, a count of my favorite things at the moment. I’m actually pretty late to the party on this one so let’s just get to it before it comes the Monday Many (not cute).

In case you haven’t heard, Tara from Beaus and Bows and I are hosting a photo-a-day challenge over on Instagram. You can find the prompt and today’s post right here. Feel free to follow along and use the hashtag #BoosAndBows. I can’t wait to see how creative we can get with each day’s prompt. If you join in, you might even find yourself featured right here on Magnolia Moon.

The Catch Up

I went out to celebrate my birthday a little early last night (it’s on Tuesday). Honestly, it was probably the first time I’d been out to a bar with my friends like that since college and at the risk of sounding like the “mom friend” that I am, it was surprisingly fun! We did everything you’d expect from a group of girls in a bar. Group bathroom selfies, the shot wheel, too many mixed drinks, obnoxious flash selfies, we even yelled “Free Bird” at the band. That last one is probably just a Southern girl thing but you get the picture. Later on in the night we met up with a group of guys we went to school with and my best friend and I realized a few of us had known each other for over 23 years. That’s longer than my little sister, who was also there, has been alive! I loved every minute of catching up with everyone and can’t wait to do it again…in a few weeks because, you know, balance.

Lip Paint

Sephora recently had Tarte’s Tarteist Lip Paint on the Weekly Wow for $11 so I snatched up 2 different shades, Deep Nude and Killin’ It. They’re pretty typical as far as liquid lipsticks go but I do feel a slight difference in the level of comfort on my lips compared to a formula like the Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks. I’m a fan of both but Tarte does feel a bit more comfortable for everyday wear.

Pumpkin Spice on Ice

This is really my first year diving into the whole Pumpkin Spice thing and I have to say…I regret nothing. Currently I’m obsessed with iced pumpkin spice lattes because even if it is October it’s still 80-90 degrees on any given day so ice is necessary. I also hit Trader Joe’s wide open and snatched up Pumpkin Waffles, Pumpkin Crisps, and Pumpkin Ravioli. All were life changing and highly recommended.

I’ve been traveling to Louisville, Kentucky once a month for about four months now for doctor’s appointments and I’m realizing that I’m pretty much falling in love with the city. So this is more of a call to action than a favorite pick but if you have any travel guides to Louisville or happen to live there, let me know! It’s made it’s way onto my list of possible cities to live in and I want to know all I can about the city.

What’s the Tee

I’ve had a strong love for RuPaul since he played the Witches Council judge on Sabrina the Teenage Witch circa 1997. With that being said, I tend to listen to a lot of true crime or political podcasts that can weigh pretty heavy on the heart sometimes. That’s where RuPaul: What’s the Tee comes in. It’s a laugh every damn time. It’s honestly become my fool-proof, instant pick-me-up method. I’ve even started listening to episodes over again. I’ve probably heard the ep with Katya at least 3 times now. Also, there is no sound more precious than the cackle of RuPaul, it gets me every time.

There ya have it, y’all. A little rushed, a little thrown together but that’s the beauty of it. Stay tuned for more of The Sunday Six soon and in the mean time, be sure to follow me on Instagram for the #BoosAndBows challenge.

Beauty Trend: Vampy Lips

Beauty Trend: Vampy Lips on Monogrammed Magnolias

Nothing says autumn beauty to me more than a dark, vampy lip. A dark lip color can be a bit intimidating at times though. That’s why I wanted to walk you through this mega trend and show off a few of my favorites. I’ve got everything from matte to glossy, practically black to shades of berry. There’s something here for everyone so if you’re looking to join in or just wanting to try something new, keep reading!

Urban Decay Vice Lipstick in Hex

I’m obsessed with all of the Urban Decay Vice Lipsticks but Hex really hits the spot when it comes to fun, Fall colors. As a Mega Matte shade Hex is not only long lasting but it’s super comfortable too. What’s not to love?

Smashbox Be Legendary Lip Lacquer in Bordeaux

Something for the glossy girls that’s just about as dark and delicious as they come. This Lip Lacquer is long wearing so it’ll take you through even the craziest of Halloween parties.

Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Damned

Back to the matte-est of mattes with this one. I’m a big Kat Von D liquid lipstick fan. In fact, they’re probably my favorite ones on the market. I was feeling adventurous when I picked up Damned

L’Oreal Color Riche Extraordinaire Lip Color in 502

I have to admit, what most attracts me to this lip color is the packaging. That’s okay though because it’s actually a really great shade! It’s glossy yet comfortable and perfectly fits into the vampy trend.

Tarte Lip Surgence Lip Tint in Moody

Consider this a lip color for all the baby vamps out there. If you’re just getting your feet wet with the trend then I suggest a little Moody to get you started. First of all, it’s incredibly easy to apply as it comes in lip crayon then it’s a great dark berry shade that flatters just about every skin tone. You can’t go wrong.

Review: Tarte Cosmetics Tartelette in Bloom Palette

Hello, Magnolias

It has been a hot minute since I did a proper beauty review and I was so mesmerized by this little gem in Sephora that I picked it up while trudging through the after-Christmas sales at the mall just so I could share it with y’all. Well, not just for that reason but it certainly helped swing the odds in favor of purchasing it.

Allow me to introduce you to the Tartelette In Bloom Palette by Tarte Cosmetics. This is the company’s second Tartelette palette but unlike its all matte predecessor, this palette features the addition of 3 shimmery “luster” shades. Personally, I love the packaging. I think the ombre flower petal front and shiny gold casing is great even though if it doesn’t feel as sturdy as, say a NARS palette. The upside is not having to deal with grubby matte packaging but the shiny plastic is a fingerprint haven so no need to be too picky here. While we’re touching on packaging I just want to say that I like the name and the whole floral motif but it’s a little misleading when it comes to shadows. When I think “In Bloom,” I don’t necessarily think of neutrals, which is the focus of this palette. Oh well, there’s more pressing matters at hand. What’s inside for example…

The large mirror is such a dream which actually came as a surprise seeing as I’m the girl who rolls her eyes when beauty gurus talk about a missing mirror lowering the value of a palette. Uh, one less piece of glass I don’t have to worry about shattering into a million little pieces? Yes, please! Not in this case though. My bedroom goes through a serious natural light deficit this time of year so carrying this guy to the window and not having to worry about propping up a mirror to do my eyeshadow is actual heaven. I even love the added touch of the logo on the mirror. Classy move, Tarte.

Let’s get to the good stuff, the actual shadows. I have never, ever, ever went to swatch an eyeshadow with my finger and been so blown away as I have been with these shadows. I guess it helps to say that this is actually my first experience with Tarte shadows but from this experience alone, I’m a fan. They are so buttery and soft without feeling crumbly or dusty in the least. I suppose the premise of Amazonian clay had me expecting a hard, dried out shadow but that in no way describes these shades. I could just lightly touch a shadow and leave my fingerprint behind, that might not seem like much but I was impressed. From there I swatched the shades across my hand and continued to be blown away. With one pass of my finger, I had crisp and bold shadows just screaming for a fluffy blending brush to top them off. I immediately started dreaming up looks from all matte everyday to sparkly glam fit for New Year. (PS: Comment below if you’d like to see a NYE tutorial with this palette!)

From the top left across: Charmer (off white), Jetsetter (warm taupe), Rocker (shimmering taupe), Smokeshow (black brown), Flower Child (peachy nude), Smarty Pants (tan), Firecracker (bronze copper), Activist (dark brown), Funny Girl (champagne), Sweetheart (peach), Rebel (chestnut brown), Leader (aubergine)

While the shadows are great on their own, their names really got me. There’s just something about a shadow that goes by “activist” that spoke to me. The palette is divided into what seems like four grouped columns from left to right: bases, crease, accents, and definers. The first column features the lightest shades and a bomb shell sparkler in funny girl that I can already tell is going to be a fast favorite.

I have to admit that the matte crease shades are what initially drew me in and they continue to every time I open the palette. I can’t wait to try out sweetheart in a warmed up crease, it’s giving me serious Jaclyn Hill vibes. The accent row could also be the fun row as it features two shimmers in rocker and firecracker and a super warm matte called rebel. Last but not least is the smokey eye motherload, the matte definers. These are the shades I had to scrub off my hand after swatching and probably the shades that are going to get the most wear as liners.

In case you couldn’t tell by all the heart eye emoji worthy gushing I’ve been doing throughout this whole review, I’m pretty in love with this palette and don’t have much negative to say aside from the fact that the shadows can get a little powdery if you go into the pan too aggressively (like me) but none of that transferred to my face as fallout so at the end of the day even that wasn’t a negative.

This palette goes for $45 but compared to others at $58 and up, I was left feeling like I snagged a bargain. The high quality of the shadows definitely lessens that blow as well.

What do you think about this palette? Have you tried it? Do you have the original Tartelette? Know of something better? Be sure to let me know in the comments below or tweet me.

February 2015 POPSUGAR Must Have Box Review

God bless my friendly neighborhood mailman. He managed to deliver this month’s POPSUGAR Must Have Box in 2 feet of snow. That’s a heroic feat that deserves many praises.

All that snow has led to some serious productivity on this side of the screen so I thought I would go ahead and do a review for y’all.

This month’s box brought with it 3 beauty products that I was particularly excited about.

The first of which was the Sally Beauty FingerPaints Nail Color in Romanticism Ruby. I think this is a super fun, sparkly red that is perfect for February. Not just for Valentine’s Day either remember February is National Heart Month and you should Go Red for Women. The packaging also promised a great application with just one coat and they really pulled through on that one. The colors in the boxes may vary but you also get a Buy One Get One Free coupon.

If I’m being honest, I was probably most looking forward to trying out the Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush. The color, True Love, is so beautiful. It’s the perfect, pinky flush for me and I love how pigmented and smooth the application is. I also really love the packaging which matches the blush color and comes with a great mirror. This product has a $26 value, which is a bit much for a blush in my opinion so I’m so happy POPSUGAR included it for me to try out.

This month’s box also came with Figs & Rouge 100% Natural Balm. You all probably already know how much I love my Rose Salve so I was really looking forward to trying this one out. Mine is in Wild Cherry but flavors will vary. The balm is super smooth, non-greasy and great for lips and my dry cuticles.

So yummy! The salted almonds in this Chuao Chocolatier Ravishing Rocky Road Bar really made it something special. I was glad they chose something fun and festive for a February box. I’m also glad it didn’t come in a heart shaped cellophane covered box, those always seem to be a bit too mocking.

Another fun and festive item that I was incredibly excited about was this BaubleBar mini arrow pendant necklace. I’m a huge fan of BaubleBar and I have a thing for arrows, I even have a tattoo of one, so this necklace was absolutely perfect for me. I really liked that the offered the necklace in various metals. I’m pretty pleased with my silver toned one.

This US Apothecary Rose Water Bubble Bath screams luxury to me and it should with a $30 price tag. In fact it screams so much lux that I’m actually planning on saving it to display in my apartment. Unfortunately that means I don’t have a good review of it but I think it’s going to be a good one, you can’t really go wrong with rose scented bubble bath. Can you?

I love to cook, I love to entertain, heck, I even love cheese platters so this heart shaped bamboo cutting board and cheese knife set from ACME Party Box Company is amazing. It’s also a POPSUGAR Exclusive. I can’t wait to display it in my new apartment. I think it’s a really fun piece that’s girly without being frilly or too Valentine-y to have out all year round.

This box came in at a value around $140 with a $39.95 price tag. That’s an incredible value for products that I’m going to get a ton of use out of. If you want to learn more about the POPSUGAR Must Have Box or even to subscribe to one yourself just click here.

This box is one of my favorites so far so I really do hope you check it out for yourself.

Leave me a comment below letting me know what you think about this review and the POPSUGAR Must Have Box.
