Nothing says autumn beauty to me more than a dark, vampy lip. A dark lip color can be a bit intimidating at times though. That’s why I wanted to walk you through this mega trend and show off a few of my favorites. I’ve got everything from matte to glossy, practically black to shades of berry. There’s something here for everyone so if you’re looking to join in or just wanting to try something new, keep reading!
I’m obsessed with all of the Urban Decay Vice Lipsticks but Hex really hits the spot when it comes to fun, Fall colors. As a Mega Matte shade Hex is not only long lasting but it’s super comfortable too. What’s not to love?
I have to admit, what most attracts me to this lip color is the packaging. That’s okay though because it’s actually a really great shade! It’s glossy yet comfortable and perfectly fits into the vampy trend.
Consider this a lip color for all the baby vamps out there. If you’re just getting your feet wet with the trend then I suggest a little Moody to get you started. First of all, it’s incredibly easy to apply as it comes in lip crayon then it’s a great dark berry shade that flatters just about every skin tone. You can’t go wrong.

I have been so lazy when it comes to my beauty routine lately. Between the move, setting up the house, and figuring out my new work schedule there just hasn’t been time for much of anything else but there have been a few heroes in the mix. What do you do when you find not one but FIVE hero products? You share them, of course!
I have not used another foundation since I bought this product three or four months ago. That’s a big deal! I literally cannot sing enough praises for this foundation. I know it’s technically a CC Cream but really it’s a full coverage foundation that can be sheered out with a damp beauty blender. That sort of versatility is why this is one of my hero products of the moment because it covers up breakouts (which are bound to happen when you’re dealing with the stress of a move), evens my skin tone, and stays all day!
I grabbed a sample of this concealer at Sephora in Nashville the night before Warped Tour because I wanted a concealer that wouldn’t crease on me the next day. I spent the whole day at Warped sweating it down in 90+ degree heat and by the time we got back to the hotel around eleven that night, my concealer was still hanging on. Now, mind you, the rest of my makeup was having issues but let me reiterate…a whole day in 90+ degree heat. That’s impressive.
During my early, bar hopping college days I used to have this holy grail hair product (which I can’t exactly remember the name of but that’s okay because they don’t make it anymore anyway) that rocked my world. It gave volume and texture and smelled amazing. I knew when I put that in my hair it was going to be a good day but then I ran out, threw away the bottle, and couldn’t find anything remotely similar…until now. DryBar’s Triple Sec is better! You see, this little guy is a 3-in-1, volumizer, textuirzer, & dry shampoo, which is perfect for a busy boss babe! Just like most DryBar products, I can’t rave about it enough.
This stuff has only been around since the middle of June and I have bought four different shades so far. That alone should speak it’s greatness but I’ll elaborate. I first tried this lipstick when Sephora sent me a huge 25 shade sample packet and I immediately fell in love with the texture and durability of the matte shades. (I’m a matte lips kinda girl so I haven’t really played around with any of the other finishes since the move, just to be fair.) They glide on so smooth, last so long, come in an incredible range of shades, and the packaging is kind of amazing. The four shades I have are Backtalk (mauve-nude), Stark Naked (light nude), Menace (fuchsia pink), and Hex (deep red-wine). I love that I can slap on Backtalk or Stark Naked with any makeup combo and be good to go while Menace and Hex are perfect, fun going-out shades.
Remember how I said the CC Cream helped cover up breakouts? Well my Clarisonic Mia helps banish them! It also gets my skin unbelievably clean even when I’m wearing all of these long wearing products. I love that it’s waterproof so I can use it in the shower when I’m being a supreme lazy girl and it’s travel friendly which is a life saver. Personally, I think this is a great product for #BackToSchoolas well, especially for all you college girls out there because rule #1 of life…always wash your face before bed. Don’t roll your eyes at me, I mean it. You won’t regret it!
Bonus Beauty Fave: I always use my Clarisonic with Philosophy’s Purity Made Simple cleanser which you can stock up on now during the #NSale. You can shop all these products directly by clicking the images down below. Oh, I know Clarisonic has come out with four or five new versions since the Mia but I’m still sticking with the OG because 1.) it’s cheaper (especially when it’s in the #NSale) and 2.) I don’t really need all those different settings, it works great as is.
What are some of your current beauty favorites or hero products? I’m always looking for recommendations so feel free to share your’s in the comments. Don’t forget to follow me on Twitter as I’ll be sharing more bonus beauty favorites over there.
If you’re a certified Sephora stalker like me then you’ve probably seen the displays, gotten the mailers, and been bombarded with the emails all singing the praises of color correcting. To be honest, it’s all a bit confusing but fear not my darlings because your friendly neighborhood beauty junkie is here to break it all down for you.
Let me start by saying there are different types of coloring correcting, you know because it’s not confusing enough as it is. The kind we’re talking about here is actually correcting with colors while another kind is correcting discoloration. We came to know the latter mostly through the CC cream craze but now you can probably find CC creams in purples and greens too so we’ll just forget about that for the time being.
Coloring Correcting with Green
Green is typically the first color that comes to mind when it comes to color correcting and it’s also probably one of the crazier colors to find in your makeup bag so it only makes sense to start there. A helpful way to explain it, at least for me, is to think back to 6th grade art class and the giant color wheel poster on the wall or you know, google it. Green is directly across from red on the color wheel, making them complimentary colors. Don’t worry, I’m not going to throwback to an art class vocab quiz…that just means that when combined they cancel each other out. Get where I’m going with this? That’s right. Green will cancel out redness. For strong redness on my cheeks or around my nose I prefer a cream product that will blend with my foundation but if I’m hoping to calm down redness from zit I tend to lean more toward liquid products that won’t cake up under concealer.
Color Correcting with Purple
There are a few reasons why purple color correcting is my favorite, one being that purple is my favorite color so I gravitate toward it like a five year old and the other is that I’m a dry skin girl that occasionally suffers from sallow skin. If we go back to the color wheel you’ll see that purple actually cancels out yellow which can make certain skin tones appear dull or sickly. Not a good look. The purple tone cancels that out in your makeup the same way purple shampoo does for blonde hair. I love using all over products like NYX CC cream or a purple primer.
Color Correcting with Peach
Now this one can come with it’s own brand of confusing because the color used really depends on your skin tone. Overall, this color is used to combat dark circles with light to medium skin tones that battle bluer dark circles using lighter peach hues while darker skin tones that suffer from deeper dark circles should use shades closer to orange in color. One thing I’ve noticed from using this sort of color correcting is while the peach color does cancel out the dark circles it often makes my under eye area a different tone than the rest of my face so I still like to go over with a highlighting concealer. These color also correct dark spots such as hyperpigmentation.
Do you suffer from any of these skin issues? Do you use color correcting to help? Let me know in the comments or tweet me!
I know I’m not the only one feeling the money crunch right now. It’s just that time of year. We’re saving up money for the holidays, going out of town, and getting gifts for others but in the midst of that madness are incredible sales and sparkly gift sets that can just make a girl weak in the knees. So while I’m sitting here counting down the hours left in the Sephora VIB Sale and temporarily putting a preventative freeze on my bank account, I thought I’d combat the urge to spend out by compiling a therapeutic Wish List!
Numero uno on the list isn’t even available yet, typical. The palette is a collaboration with Gwen Stefani, Urban Decay’s first ever collab, and will be available on November 22. Photo courtesy by @karisbrelsford on Instagram.
As you can probably tell from #2 on this list, I’m always down for a good Kate Spade bag but throw in the fact that this particular one will actually charge your phone and I’m the first in line…figuratively speaking of course.
What’s on your wish list this month? Let me know in the comments and be sure to follow me through my social media links below (including Snapchat: @angelmerisa23).
I am very excited about what I have to share with you today, like scream in the middle of the makeup aisle excited so let’s just jump right in. About a year ago I was hanging out with my sister when she showed me this killer, duo chrome eye shadow she’d been using. It came in a eight shadow palette and I instantly wanted one of my own.
I looked everywhere for the palette and could not find a single trace of it, that is until now. About two weeks ago I was just doing my usual pre-grocery shopping makeup aisle browse when I noticed that the displays were freshly stocked. Which, if you live in a small town then you know, is definitely something to take notice of. I allowed myself a glimmer of hope, turned my head, and there it was! The only one left too. I may have let out a squeal of joy when I grabbed it up. The Wet n Wild Comfort Zone palette was finally mine!
I couldn’t wait to get home to try it all out, I’d almost forgotten how beautiful it was in person. The palette is broken down into 2 columns of 4 shadows, one warmer side and one cooler side. The warmer side features a yellow golden browbone highlight shade, a bronzey base, a warm brown crease shade, and a dark chocolate shade with flecks of red shimmer. The cool side includes a great taupe highlight shade, a fun green base, a black with gold shimmer, and the shade that started it all…a teal & green to burnt orange duo chrome.
I’ve always been a fan of Wet n Wild shadows and the quality in this palette does not disappoint especially considering the $4.97 price tag. The shadows are so buttery and easy to blend while also being decently pigmented. I would put these shadows on a similar level as my favorite Urban Decay shadows as far as texture and formulation but the pigment is lacking a little. But that’s okay because these particular shades come to a grand total of less than .75 cents a piece whereas UD can run $18 a pop.
I’m not particularly a fan of colorful shadows but these just lean enough on the neutral side to totally catch my eye. When I look at this palette I just imagine countless, fun looks I can do. It makes me think this palette is perfectly named as Comfort Zone because it’s not like I’m stepping out of my comfort zone with these shades but rather I’m bringing them in the comfort zone with me. Haha!
I can totally make this palette my own too. For instance, I use the highlight shades as everyday bases rather than on my browbone like the palette suggests. The darker shades make great accents and smoky definers too. My favorite thing about this palette, however, is how unique these shades are. I mean, that duo chrome shade is just not something you don’t see everyday.
Here it is showing off the teal color…
…then the lovely sort of chocolate brown that comes off as a warmer, burnt shade on.
If you want to see some looks with this palette then be sure to follow me on Instagram & Snapchat (just starting to use Snapchat for the blog I’d love to have you follow me there!), I’m @angelmerisa23 on both!
Do you have a go-to Fall eye shadow? I’d love to hear all about it in the comments below!
Have I mentioned lately how much I absolutely adore Fall?
Trick question! I know I’ve talked about it a ton but it just makes me so happy. I’m officially breaking out sweaters and more from my Fall Essentials list so I thought I would take it a step further share my Fall Makeup Favorites with you now.
If you want to see all these picks in action then check out my Instagram! My profile picture and this picture are actually the same look just with two different lip options.
L to R: Cool Nude, Porcelain Doll, Wearing Only A Smile
First of all, have you tried Essence? It’s quickly becoming one of my favorite drugstore brands. These lipsticks are a new Fall collection and get this, they’re only $2.99 at Ulta. It’s been a while since I paid less than $10 for a lipstick let alone less than $3 so since they were so cheap I went ahead and picked up all three shades.
There’s only one problem with getting all three, one that’s similar to a situation Goldie Locks found herself in. The lightest shade is way too light and the middle shade give me concealer lips, but that last shade is just right! I’ve fixed that by using them together for an ombre lip. They’re all super creamy and long lasting (especially when paired with the next product we’re going to talk about) so pairing them together totally works.
L to R: Honey Berry, Satin Mauve, Wish Me A Rose, In The Nude (all by Essence), Addiction, Eastend Snob (both by Rimmel), Cute Pink, and Femme Fatale (by Essence)
I totally hopped on the lip liner bandwagon with some popular Rimmel picks. Mostly because Amelia Liana LOVES Eastend Snob and I love Amelia so I had to give it a try. I wanted more options but didn’t really want to continue paying the over $5 price at Ulta so I hunted out some super cheap picks and that’s how I found Essence! They’re lip liners are amazing, as in they last longer than the Rimmel ones, and they’re only $1.49. That’s why I’m treating them like Pokemon and collecting them all.
There’s just something about a classic red lip that I love this time of year, as well as every other season. Also, when it comes to makeup, Kat Von D is killing it. Every product of her’s that I come across has hooked me immediately and her Everlasting Liquid Lipstick is no different. I want every shade! They really are long lasting and easy to apply but most importantly to me, they are incredibly comfortable. I can barely feel it on my lips and it doesn’t smudge. Which is important when it comes to red lips. I even have to use a pretty heavy duty liquid makeup remover to get it off.
Another fabulous drugstore discovery. I was just browsing on Ulta’s website when I stumbled upon this incredible Makeup Revolution palette. What caught my eye was the resemblance to the Urban Decay Naked 3 palette. I thought the rosy tinted shadows and deeper pigments would be great for some Fall smokey eyes and at $7 I just couldn’t pass it up.
I was pleasantly surprised by how pigmented the shadows are and the range of colors. There’s even a great matte base color as well as two matte crease colors to go with the shimmering gold, taupe, purple, brown, and pink shades. I love this palette so much that I’m ordering more of the Redemption Palettes asap.
Everyone is talking about this highlight and for good reason. It’s insanely pretty! Like so pretty that I’ve actually considered buying a back up seeing as it’s limited edition. While the champagne gold highlight is just out of this world, my favorite part about the entire thing is that this product was made as a collaboration between one of my favorite YouTubers, Jaclyn Hill, and a favorite company of mine, Becca. It’s just so perfect I want to wear it all year round.
What are your Fall Makeup Favorites? I’m always open to new makeup product suggestions so leave them in the comments below.
True Blue Shea Cashmere & Silk Hand Cream – This is one of my favorite hand creams every but turns out it’s fairly expensive. This little guy was $6 and a mini size which I actually bought online thinking it was a small size but not this small. I would definitely repurchase this but only during one of Bath & Body Work’s extreme sales.
Sephora Daily Makeup Brush Cleaner– I love this stuff. If you’ve never tried a makeup brush cleaner spray for spot cleaning your brushes then you should grab this little guy from Sephora because it makes brush cleaning a breeze. Just spritz this on your brush, swirl over a towel, and viola you’ve got yourself a clean brush that smells good and is sanitized to boot.
Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara – I feel like I’ve talked about this stuff a ton, which is justified considering that I’ve went through this full size plus 2 deluxe samples. You can read more about it in my last Five Favorite Things post.
Soft Lips Lip Protectant in Sugar & Spice and Cherry – Soft Lips have been my go-to lip balm in the past and these are two of my favorite flavors. Sugar & Spice is amazing but unfortunately it was limited edition for Christmas and who knows if it will come back around. Love that they have SPF 20 too. Gotta protect those lips, ladies.
Bath & Body Works Oahu Coconut Sunset Body Cream – This scent just takes me back to last summer by the pool. I used to slather this on with my sunscreen. I can practically feel the water around me just by sniffing the bottle. I’ve moved on to more powerful body butters since then but I’ve got a backup to get me through this summer.
Bath & Body Works Aruba Coconut Body Cream – Same goes for this scent too but I apparently didn’t have great memories of summer 2013 because the smell of this stuff just doesn’t do it for me anymore. I’ve still got a little left but I’m over it, plus I’m pretty sure 2 years is well past the expiration date on this guy.
The Body Shop Passion Fruit Body Butter – I was surprised at how fast I went through this product. I hauled it back in February (read the post here) but I don’t think I started using it right away. I really liked the scent although I oddly feel like I would have enjoyed it more in the Fall. I enjoyed the product overall but I really can’t see myself paying $20 for a body butter at The Body Shop so I think I might stick to picking them up when they pop up at Marshall’s.
Bath & Body Works Amber Blush Shower Gel – One of my favorite scents that BB&W has ever come out with has got to be Amber Blush. I’ve got a scent memory for this one too, it’s jamming out to Iggy Azalea in the crappy little communal bathroom back in college. I hated it at the time of course but I always smile when I’m reminded of it now. Great lasting power especially when paired with the matching body cream.
Well there ya have it. Let’s see how long we can go until the next one…not long considering that I just added like two products to my empties bag right after finishing this post. Haha Let me know what y’all think in the comments and be sure to follow my social media links below.
We all say it but geez, where the hell did September go? I feel like it was just Labor Day yesterday now it’s October tomorrow. That can’t be right. Oh well, September always seems like one of those forgotten months to me anyway. It’s literally the transition month between Summer to Autumn so everyone is so busy putting away their bathing suits and settling into school and scarves and crap that no one knows what day it is anyway.
It’s because of that rush to get settled in to a new season that I had to think long and hard about what things really were my favorites this month but I think I’ve gathered some good ones.
– Beauty –
First things first, we finally moved into our new house! Yay!!! However, that meant that the early weeks of September were full of lugging boxes from house to house, unloading trunks and entire cars full of crap, then unpacking all of that crap. All that amounted to a lot of sweat and some tears. So for the days that I did decide to throw some makeup on I had 3 main goals.
1. It had to be quick and easy.
That’s where the e.l.f. Tinted Moisturizer came into play. What’s an easy base to apply than tinted moisturizer? Nothing. While I will admit this isn’t the best tinted moisturizer that I’ve tried it did get the job done. The SPF of 20 was perfect when it came to protecting my face from those harsh end-of-summer rays and the gentle ingredients and vitamins made my skin feel great at the end of the day. It also doesn’t cake up or run too much which came in handy during my most sweaty struggles, like when I had to pack countless milk crates of books up the hill in 90 degree weather. The $3 price tag helped a lot, not gonna lie.
2. It has to last.
Urban Decay All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray has been my best friend this past month. No joke. I’ve spritzed this stuff all over my face practically everyday. It’s a super light spray that blankets your face with such a fine mist that you don’t have to worry about it messing anything up. I notice such a difference when I take my makeup off at night after using this, there’s more makeup to take off…meaning it’s last longer, duh! Now that we’re cooling down a bit, even though that could change at any moment here in the South, I’m sure I’ll go back to using this for special occasions when I need a little insurance on my makeup staying put all night (hence the name) but it did a fabulous job during this sweaty September. That’s starting to be an unfavorable theme today.
3. I needed to look a bit more alive than I was feeling.
Bet you weren’t expecting that one in my list of demands. If you were, then bravo you must be have been paying attention to the sheer amount of stress I was under, or maybe just tired of all the complaining. Anyway, September was stressful and I found myself under the influence of a terrible concoction of fatigue mixed with sleep deprivation for most of the month (all of that has been resolved so no worries). That meant that I could pack on the makeup and still look like an extra in The Walking Dead, until I discovered the wonders of a great peach-toned blush. Enter e.l.f. Baked Blush in Peachy Cheeky.
Oh goodness, I cannot sing enough praises for this product. It’s a great peachy shade for my skin tone and really brightens up my face with the perfect amount of “I’m alive, I swear!” flush. It has a bit of shimmer that I’m not too keen on in blush but it actually works really well in this product, it’s the same type of shimmer I would use as a highlighting shade so it’s practically 2-in-1.
– Music –
My mom is obsessed with “All About That Bass” so much so that she begged me to find other songs by the artist, Meghan Trainor. That’s when I discovered Meghan’s EP Title and I pretty much haven’t stopped listening to it since.
If you like the single then you will love the title track as well as Dear Future Husband. They are the perfect amount of John Waters 60s kitsch mashed with a campy 90s feel which is pretty much how I wish my entire world appeared so of course it gets my seal of approval
– TV –
Before we moved in I bought myself a new Smart TV as a treat and it has only furthered my Netflix addiction. I don’t think I’ve watched actual live TV all month. No, that’s a lie. I watched all FOUR hours of Gone With the Wind on TCM last night, like any good Monogrammed Magnolia would. *insert hair flip emoji here*
That incredibly easy access to Netflix’s full library has lead to some serious binge watching. It the course of like 2 weeks I’ve made it through 3 seasons of New Girl, Season 1 of American Horror Story (I was already obsessed with Coven and I cannot wait for Freak Show), as well as 2 seasons of Bob’s Burgers (seriously underated and absolutely hilarious) but a stand out favorite has to be Don’t Trust the B— in Apartment 23. All I’m going to say about this show is that James van der Beek (yes, Dawson) plays an exaggerated caricature version of himself alongside his bad-girl bff Krysten Ritter and if that’s not enough to make you watch it then I don’t know what more give.
Also, Shonda Thursdays being back on ABC is an obvious favorite but I want to get into that more after I watch this week’s set of episodes. I’m loving it so far! #TGIT
– Movie –
September was mostly about the shows but I did manage to sneak some documentaries into my Netflix queue (I know, it’s called a list now but I still prefer queue). One of my surprise favorites was Scatter My Ashes at Bergorf’s, a doc about the iconic NYC department store. I can officially say you can forget about burying me inside the Louis store (I just couldn’t help myself), I’ll take Bergdorf Goodman any day. If you’re in to fashion or New York in general than this is definitely a must-see.
– Book –
I think I mentioned this last month but after I watched If I Stay in theaters I immediately started reading the book that it was based on. I fell in love with the story but was so happy that there was more to it. Get this, there’s a sequel…and it’s from the boyfriend’s perspective! I haven’t read more than a couple chapters of that one yet, which is titled Where She Went, but I will definitely let you know what I think.
– YouTube –
September was a big month for some of my favorite YouTubers but I truly enjoyed getting to tag along with Zoella above all. She’s been daily vlogging all month long on her vlogging channel, MoreZoella, so her viewers got to see her celebrate her boyfriend’s 21st birthday, reach 6 million subscribers, head back home for the first time all year, and even launch her own line of bath products and accessories for Zoella Beauty! How exciting! I loved every minute of her vlogs and I’m kind of sad that they’ll be winding down soon but there is so much ahead that I’m also looking forward to the future (she’s releasing a book soon!).
That seems like such a nice thing doesn’t it? I feel like I just got to experience those moments with a friend. That kind of connection is what I love about YouTube.
Ahhhhh! I have wanted one of these for years! I finally got my hands on one, in Lulu aka my favorite print, during the After Party Sale when it was close to $100 off. Yes, that means this scarf once cost over $100. That’s probably why I love it so.
I tried oh so hard to be patient and wait for cooler weather so that I could break it out of my closet but I just couldn’t take it much longer and had to wear it a few times this month despite the heat.

September marked a dark, dark time in the life of Yankee fans everywhere as The Captain played his last game at Yankee Stadium. I may have cried a little, I’m not ashamed to say it but nothing compares to the joy and devastation that bind-sided me while watching a little TV earlier this month when this came across my screen.
If you’re a fan of Derek Jeter, the Yankees, or even baseball in general there is no way you can tell me you didn’t absolutely love that commercial. I just so happen to be an avid fan of all three so you can only imagine how I felt watching it for the first time. It was a mix of emotions I hope to never feel again and I’ll just leave it at that.
I hope you’ve enjoyed this look into my favorites for September. I can’t wait to see what October has in store. I’m sure there will be plenty favorites to share then especially considering that it’s my birthday month!!! That’s right, I’ll be turning 23 on October 3rd! That’s a favorite right there.
